Event Structure & Topics

The Conference, to be held within UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, carries the title Global Education & Learning for a Just, Peaceful & Sustainable World, and will include a mixture of inspirational keynote presentations, academic papers and presentations from empirical research, debates on key issues and opportunities for meetings of specialist Journal boards, early career researchers, NGO practitioners and policymakers. A wealth of parallel sessions will cover themes that emerge amongst submitted proposals, e.g. school-based education, further and higher education, adult education and informal learning. All plenary sessions will include discussions on how to take forward the themes addressed by the speakers in developing and implementing policies, informing research, and helping to improve the quality of educational practice.

Plenary sessions, which will also be available to online audiences, will be in a mix of English and French, with simultaneous interpretation provided both ways. Breakout sessions as a default will be in English, unless specific proposals are made that require other languages - attendees who are leading such sessions are welcome to arrange their own translation or interpretation services for this. See the call for proposals if you are interested in this.

Major event themes

  • Global Citizenship Education for Social Justice
  • Peace Education in a World of Conflict and Discord
  • Global Education and Learning for a Sustainable World

Who are the organisers?

The event is organised by the Academic Network of Global Education and Learning (ANGEL) in partnership with UNESCO, with the cooperation of Global Education Network Europe (GENE), IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education & Society, and the UNESCO Chair in GCED in Higher Education, based at the University of Bologna. This event, along with the other activities of the ANGEL network, are co-funded by the European Union.*

Partnership with UNESCO

Reflecting on this success, ANGEL will this time be partnering with UNESCO to deliver its 2023 conference. As the leading international organisation promoting debates and research around education for sustainable development and global citizenship, UNESCO offers a perfect forum for this event.

The European Declaration on Global Education to 2050

The ANGEL conference intends to encourage discussion and activity around the new Declaration on Global Education, also known as the Dublin Declaration on GE. This important new European strategy framework aims to define a long-term vision, and build broader and deeper political support and commitment for Global Education. Several sessions on the 20th of June will examine the implications, and evaluation, of this landmark agreement

Coming to the conference

We estimate that the face-to-face event will host 250 participants from all over the world, but especially from Europe. In line with UNESCO's policies, the conference will be free. We strongly encourage prospective attendees to seek financial support from their institution to help support their attendance at this important event. Those who register will be sent a list of hotels near UNESCO, some of which offer preferential rates.

Public tickets for in-person attendance are now sold out, but you are able to register for online attendance - to plenary sessions only.

Background

This will be the 4th international conference on Global Education and Learning organised by ANGEL. The first three editions (2017, 2019, 2021) were organized by the Development Education Research Centre (DERC) within IOE, with the support of GENE, and were all held in London, apart from the 2021 event which was held online. A further major event, focused primarily on Early Career Researchers, was held in 2020, and hosted by the University of Oulu.

ANGEL is a EU co-funded network established in 2017 through close cooperation between GENE and DERC.  Building upon foundational collaborations between these organisations and the University of Bamberg in Germany, the University of Oulu in Finland, and the University of Bologna in Italy, the project has grown steadily to incorporate many more partners. The project arose in response to the need to establish and reinforce existing relationships among scholars (particularly early career stage researchers) and academic institutions working in global education and related areas, and to link and interface this community with interested policymakers and practitioners.

The network has grown quickly, with more than 870 members in 85 different countries as of late 2022. As well as the aforementioned conferences, the network has produced a number of publications, and runs a webinar series. For more details, please visit our website www.angel-network.net.
